Who we are.
Most orgs optimized for headcount. Vanguard optimized for the people who stayed. Seven years and 750 Vanguardians later, that bet still holds.
The Origin
How we got here.
Vanguard was founded in September 2018 by DrakoHardt and Randrik. They'd watched enough orgs promise structure and deliver a dead Discord. Their pitch was different: an org that treats its members like adults, runs ops that people show up to, and never confuses a big roster with a real community.
The early days were scrappy — a handful of pilots, one server, and the conviction that most orgs were solving the wrong problem. Other orgs optimized for headcount. DrakoHardt and Randrik optimized for retention. That distinction shaped everything that followed.
Growth came through word of mouth. One pilot tells another. That pilot shows up, stays, brings two more. No recruitment drives. No mass DMs. Just the kind of reputation you earn by being consistently good to people over years, not weeks.
Seven years later: 750 members, daily operations, a training pipeline, and organizational infrastructure that most gaming communities spend years planning. Vanguard built it while they were still planning.

Events, training, and operations every day of the week

We're lawful, not boring. Vanguard members don't prey on law-abiding players — that's the line. But within that boundary, we run smuggling ops, covert insertions, tactical deception, and the kind of creative problem-solving that keeps the verse interesting. We bring order. We're just not precious about how.
We've lost members over the years — five of them permanently, honored on our In Memoriam page. When we say this community matters, we mean it in the way that only people who've shared real time, real ops, and real loss together can. This is a gaming org. The relationships are not.
The manifesto, minus the manifesto.
Custom training platform. Quarterly newsletter. Academy certification system. Operational doctrine tested in hundred-pilot engagements. Other orgs talk about building infrastructure. Vanguard ships it — because 750 people can't coordinate on enthusiasm alone.
Every member gets structured learning from Star Citizen basics through advanced specializations. When you fly a coordinated op, the pilot on your wing earned their cert the same way you did. That's not a nice-to-have — it's the reason you trust each other at 3 AM in contested space.
Tactics, training, org structure — all of it gets revisited when the game changes. Patches wipe progress; we rebuild. Mechanics shift; we adjust. Star Citizen isn't done changing, and neither are we.
Structure that serves, not suffocates.
The combat arm. Defense, bounty hunting, pirate suppression — from solo dogfights to capital fleet engagements. When forty Vanguardians drop into a contested zone, Security goes in first and leaves last.
The economic engine. Mining, salvage, fuel ops — from solo Prospector runs to massive Orion operations. Every ship in the fleet flies on what Industries extracts, and every long op runs on the fuel they provide.
The logistics backbone. Transport, trade, settlement operations. Every new Vanguard foothold in the verse starts with Frontier moving the assets, running the routes, and building the infrastructure.
The eyes and ears. Exploration, research, data running, reconnaissance. Science maps what's uncharted and studies what's unknown — then tells the rest of the org whether to approach it or avoid it.
The strategic center — not a Wing you join, but one you're nominated into. Command sets direction, coordinates cross-Wing ops, and handles the planning that keeps 750 people moving toward the same objective.
Good communication is the bridge between confusion and clarity. Our goal has always been to minimize assumptions and provide clear, concise communication to every Vanguardian.

Vanguard Leadership Council
Leadership
Who runs this thing.
Officers and Chiefs lead at the unit and Wing level — academies, training, operations. They're the people you'll interact with daily, and every one of them earned the position by doing the work before they were asked to lead it.
Wing Commanders sit one level up. Strategy, advocacy, the big picture. Their officers run the day-to-day so Commanders can focus on where the Wing is headed, not where it is today.
Above the Wings sits the Vanguard Leadership Council — three Marshals and the Wardens who hold responsibility for the org's identity and long-term mission. The structure exists so that 750 people can move in the same direction without a single person becoming a bottleneck.
Seven years and counting.
DrakoHardt and Randrik start Vanguard. A Discord server, a handful of pilots, and one rule: real life comes first.
Word of mouth does the recruiting. Wing structure formalizes. Training programs launch. The community finds its voice.
Membership crosses 500. Operational complexity outgrows the tools. The old website starts showing its age. Time to build something new.
Capital ships enter the persistent universe. Vanguard runs its first Idris operations. The newsletter launches. Organizational structure evolves to match a game that's finally becoming what it promised.
750+ members. Custom-built platform replaces the aging website. Capital ship boarding doctrine, fleet-scale ops, and a training pipeline from day-one orientation through advanced certifications. The question isn't whether Vanguard is ready for what Star Citizen becomes — it's whether Star Citizen is ready for Vanguard.
In Memoriam
Those we carry with us.
Over seven years, we've lost members of our community — people who were part of this before they were gone. We remember Splatterhead, Lady SolarA Solarwind, TotenKopf, moonclaw, and SOLHieLUS. Their contributions to Vanguard are part of our history, and they are not forgotten.
